When You Need a Crown

Crowns are typically recommended after a root canal (to protect a tooth that's now more brittle), on a tooth with a large fracture that a filling can't support, or on a tooth with an old, failing filling that's too large to refill. Your dentist will show you the X-ray and explain why a filling isn't enough before recommending a crown. Crowns following root canal therapy are coordinated with Dr. Mansouri, our endodontic specialist — see his background on our Meet the Doctors page.

Materials We Use

Porcelain crowns give the most natural, tooth-like appearance and are the usual choice for front teeth. Zirconia is stronger and more chip-resistant, often used on back molars that take more chewing force. Metal-backed porcelain combines strength with a tooth-colored surface for cases that need extra durability. We'll recommend the right material for the specific tooth and your bite, not a one-size-fits-all default.

How We Approach It

We match crown material and shade to your bite and the rest of your smile, and walk you through the tradeoffs between materials before you decide. Where equipment allows, we offer same-day crowns so you're not wearing a temporary for weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a crown last?

A well-fitted crown typically lasts 10–15 years or more with normal care.

Will my crown match my other teeth?

Yes — we shade-match porcelain and zirconia crowns to your surrounding teeth.

Does a bridge feel different from a natural tooth?

Most patients adjust within a couple of weeks and describe a well-fitted bridge as feeling natural.

Is getting a crown painful?

No — the tooth is numbed beforehand. Some sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal.

What's the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A crown covers the entire tooth for strength and structure; a veneer only covers the front surface and is mainly cosmetic.
