What Happens If You Wait
A small cavity that just needs a filling today can, if left untreated, work its way toward the nerve of the tooth — at which point a filling is no longer enough and it turns into a root canal, or in more advanced cases, an extraction. The earlier we see it, the smaller and less expensive the fix.
How We Approach It
We explain the cost and reasoning behind each option before any work begins, and we'll always tell you if a less invasive option (like a filling) is on the table before recommending something bigger (like a crown). Most single-tooth restorative work is completed in one to two visits. Root canal therapy is handled by Dr. Mansouri, our endodontic specialist — see his background on our Meet the Doctors page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need a filling or a crown?
It depends on how much healthy tooth structure is left. Smaller cavities usually just need a filling; teeth with larger fractures or heavy prior fillings often need a crown for support.
Are fillings tooth-colored?
Yes, we use tooth-colored composite fillings rather than metal amalgam.
What if I'm missing a tooth?
Depending on your case, we may recommend a bridge, a dental implant, or a partial denture — we'll go over the tradeoffs of each at your visit.
Does restorative work hurt?
We use local anesthesia for fillings and crowns, so the procedure itself is not painful. Mild soreness afterward is normal and usually brief.
Will insurance cover restorative treatment?
Most PPO plans cover a meaningful portion of restorative work like fillings and crowns. We'll help verify your specific benefits before treatment.
